The city of Sunnyvale is situated within 24 square miles and home to approximately 150,000 Bay Area residents. The fifth largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area and the second largest in Santa Clara County, but also a town of quiet family neighborhoods, strong schools and a diverse community of people. Its 20 parks and efficient, high quality city services along with its central location make it a popular choice among homebuyers.
One of the few cities in the United States to have a single unified Department of Public safety, all personnel are trained as firefighters, police officers, and EMTs, so that they can respond to an emergency in any of the three roles, and offers an award-winning record of safety and efficiency. It consistently ranks among the top safest cities nationwide, most recently ranked 7th by Forbes Magazine in 2009.
Sunnyvale has 476 acres of parkland, open space and public landscaping, including an impressive 37,000 trees. The city’s park system was designed so that every neighborhood was within walking distance of a green space. The 70-acre Baylands Park offers paths, picnic areas and active recreation opportunities. In keeping with its naturalist theme, the park embraces native grasses, open meadows and an additional 150-acres of seasonal wetlands. One of the most popular, Washington Park was constructed in 1945 near historic downtown. Its 12 acres are well shaded and offer picnic facilities, a swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts and a playground. On the opposite end of the park spectrum is Full Circle Farm, the largest sustainable community garden in the Silicon Valley.
Sunnyvale also offers a variety of shopping and dining opportunities. Its historic downtown district situated on Murphy Avenue is brimming with restaurants and cafes, salons, shopping and spas, banks and professional services as well as upscale apartment communities.
